Chump of the Day: Tony Caputo

It’s been nearly two years since a hoax purporting to be an Associated Press article “revealed” that Barack Obama registered at Occidental College as Indonesian citizen “Barry Soetoro.” It’s been nearly as long since the hoax was exposed as an utter fake.

But today right-wing conspiracy theorist Tony Caputo sent along the text of the hoax as an e-mail to me, with the preface “APPEARS TO BE THE PROOF, AT LAST. FROM SNOPES.COM. SNOPES SAY’S IT’S TRUE.”

Of course, Snopes documents that it’s false.

Tony Caputo, whether you know it or not, you are the Chump of the Day!

Another Tea Party Chump Spreading the Obama Occidental Lie

You know, when we started this website, Americans for Freedom of Information, we thought it would be a short-time effort to point out the absurdity in the fake Associated Press “news story” that some desperate right-winger pulled together in an effort to make you think that Barack Obama wasn’t born in this country. Surely, we thought, if we just make it apparent to people that the group “Americans for Freedom of Information” did not actually exist, then everybody will figure out that they’ve been hoaxed and move on to some new crackpot conspiracy, maybe about Corn Flakes.

But no. Seven months later, the completely fictitious “shocking revelation” that Barack Obama registered at Occidental College under the name “Barry Soetoro” is still being posted as fresh news on right-wing websites.

Take the movement website called Tea Party Patriots. In a “news flash” from December 8, 2009, the Tea Party Patriots “report”:

AP- WASHINGTON D.C. – In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama’s qualifications for the presidency, the group “Americans for Freedom of Information” has Released copies of President Obama’s college transcripts from Occidental College . Released today, the transcript school indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California.

The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama’s detractors have been seeking….

… and so on and so forth. The article is a fake, easily proved so, and yet the Tea Party Patriots are eager to believe the baloney nonetheless. Why? Why do they need to believe that Barack Obama is not a real American? What itch does that fiction scratch?

Chumps of the Day: The Firearms Forum and Shooter45

Psst! Shh! C’mere. Yeah, you, Mr. Scalia. Don’t tell a soul, but hey, I’ve got a brief here underneath this trenchcoat. C’mere, yeah, take a look…

Shooter45 of The Firearms Forum declares:

AP- WASHINGTON D.C. – In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama’s qualifications for the presidency, the group “Americans for Freedom of Information” has Released copies…

…blah, blah, blah, you’ve read the rest of this fake, hoax, not real, fictional, baloney “news story” that never actually existed. It’s been thoroughly debunked for over half a year as a not-real story by everybody supposed to have been involved. A simple Google search for any part of the text of this hoax story will turn up proof, on the first page of links, that the story is utterly false…

… and still these chumps over at The Firearms Forum are posting it around and talking about “the story” as if it were real! Zut alors! Quel amusement. (That’s Gay Socialist for “boy, you will believe anything, won’t you?”)

AL Mount seriously intones in response, “Please keep us informed.”

Jim Summers of Patoka Lake, Indiana declares with the sadder-but-no-not-actually-wiser-yet cynicism of his years, “Surely you don’t think this is going change anything, it is what it is and we have got the man until hopefully the next election.”

No, they won’t let the truth out! Especially that bit about the Sasquatch impersonating Linda Lingle.

GunHugger in Southwest Pennsylvania finds the real smoking gun that you won’t pry out of his cold, dead, hands: “I few days ago I heard him say ‘I grew up here’ while speaking in Hawaii. I thought it was odd that he didn’t say he was ‘born and grew up here’.”

A HA! And he also said “I,” not “We,” clearly indicating that he thinks that everybody in the state of Hawaii is a refugee from Palau!

But wait. That’s not the best part. Here comes the cherry on top… the SATAN reference, courtesy of OklahomaBrian: “Could he be the foretold ‘Great Deceiver’?”

Bing! Bing! Bing! Bing! Tilt! 5,000,000,000,000 Bonus Points for the SATAN reference!

These are chumps with style.

A Clue for the Literal-Minded

Read these tiny words very closely: the group Americans for Freedom of Information does not exist, just like the supposed "AP article" you keep cutting and pasting into e-mails to your irritated family does not exist, just like the "Daily Mail article" referenced in the fake "AP article" does not exist. They're all fabrications. Fakes. Hoaxes. Ask yourself why you're so eager to believe these obvious fakes. No, really. Really, really ask yourself.

A Clue for Those Especially Allergic to Satire

No, we didn't create the hoax, either. Remember, we at Americans for Freedom of Information don't exist!

No One knows who did create the hoax. Unfortunately, we don't know No One or where he lives, so we can't ask No One about it. We do know her sister, Imnot Telling, but ever since the thing in the place with that other thing, we're not on speaking terms.
